Legenda o mesačnej šachte sa dostala do povedomia Čechov a Slovákov po krátko skončení 2. svetovej vojny, kedy sa objavilo svedectvo povstaleckého kapitána Antonína Horáka. Vo svojom denníku písal o svojom úžasnom objave v tatranských horách. Počas bojov mal vstúpiť do jaskyne, ktorá ho ochromila natoľko, že sa tam niekoľkokrát vrátil. Po dôkladnom prieskume prišiel k záveru, že jaskynný útvar nie je prírodného pôvodu ale je vybudovaný z akéhosi umelého materiálu. Steny boli podľa kapitánových zápiskov hladké a lesklé ako sklo a celé vnútro "jaskyne" vyzeralo ako dômyselné dielo pradávnej civilizácie.
Horák spomínal vo svojom denníku, že šachta mala valcovitý tvar. Steny tmavomodrej farby boli mimoriadne tvrdé a odolné voči poškodeniu. Údery krompáčom či rany z pištole v nich nezanechali žiadne stopy. Za touto šachtou mal neskôr Horák objaviť aj ďalšiu jaskyňu, ktorá dala celému podzemnému komplexu charakteristické pomenovanie vďaka tvaru polmesiaca.
Informácie o tajuplnom objave v slovenskom podzemí sa dostali aj do zahraničia vďaka spisovateľovi a záhadológovi z Francúzska - Jacquesovi Bergierovi, ktorí príbeh mesačnej šachty na základe Horákových zápiskov zaradil medzi svetové záhady vo svojom diele Ráno kúzelníkov.

No aj na to má existovať vysvetlenie. Meno Antonín Horák prijal muž menom Ernest Hönig, kvôli svojmu židovskému pôvodu. Po vojne utiekol do Palestíny, kde aj zomiera. Môže sa však jednať aj o Antonína Horáka, ktorý po vojne emigroval do Spojených štátov amerických, kde svojho času zverejnil zápisky z objavu Mesačnej jaskyne v jednom časopise. Odiaľto mal svoje informácie čerpať aj spisovateľ Jacquies Bergier.
Mnohí nemenovaní pamätníci minulých čias tvrdili, že Horákov objav nebo po vôli vojenským tajným službám Sovietskeho zväzu, ktoré vystopovali jeho činnosť a zabránili verejnosti, aby sa o jaskyni dozvedela celú pravdu.
